Flash
Macromedia Flash is the leading program used by professional web animators and website designers. It is also used to produce many animated TV series.
Animation in Flash
Workshops
These are high-tech workshops, and it is really only suitable for clients who have Macromedia Flash installed on a set of PCs for participants to work on.
I have run this workshop twice so far, for groups of teenagers as part of the BBC Blast on Tour project (in 2006 and 2007) , and it has proved very popular.
Participants
Flash nested-object animation is a complex subject to grasp, even at the beginner level, so I would recommend it for those doing well in Key Stage 3 and 4.
Facilities and Materials
Every PC needs a mouse and a free USB socket for my USB key, and up to two participants can share each computer with Flash installed.
I will need a digital whiteboard or other large display to hook up to my laptop so I can demonstrate.
Normally the host will provide the consumable materials. All materials can be supplied by me; details available on request.
I work in front of the whole class at first, drawing on a floor-standing plain paper flipchart.
Participants should preferably be sitting at PCs.
For drawing their animation pieces, they will each need several sheets of A4 copier paper (the cheaper, less white brands are best), a pencil, shared erasers and sharpeners, a black gel pen, and something flat to rest on (If not desks, clipboards or big hardback books).
The drawings produced will be scanned or photographed, thresholded and transferred to the participant's computer. I can do this with my camera, laptop and USB key, or the participants may be able to do it if the facilities are provided in the venue.
