This is a very level walk along both sides of the river Tyne. The walk can be commenced from either Wylam, where there is parking in the railway station or Country park, car parks, or from Newburn Country park where there is parking and toilets.
Leave Newburn Country park, heading east down the river, across a footbridge over Leigh Beck. Continue past the Boathouse Inn, on your left. Notice the marks on the Inn wall showing the level of the river during previous floods. Turn right and cross the river Tyne over Newburn Bridge. At the end of the bridge turn right down some steps and follow the riverside path up river.
Follow the path in front of the Ferry House and continue on the path which runs parallel to the Newcastle to Carlisle railway line. When the path moves away from the railway line you will pass along the edge of Ryton Golf course. After the golf course the path leaves the river bank to continue beside the railway line again until the path ends in the Wylam railway station car park.
Leave the Wylam railway station car park and turn right to cross over the Wylam bridge over the river Tyne. About 50 yards over the bridge turn right into the car park and take the path on the right, leaving the car park on the old railway line, which ran on the north side of the river.
You will pass some greenhouses and then a cottage on the left, which was the home of George Stephenson. Pass the Close House golf course on your left and eventually you will reach Heddon Haughs farm, also on your left. Another half a mile will bring you to a row of cottages, Blaney Row, again on your left.
Continue on the footpath past the cottages until you reach the signs for Newburn car park. Cross the road and enter the car park to complete the walk.
