Blanchland

9.5 miles with a steady climb to 360 metres

MAP

Park in the car park about 100 metres from the centre of Blanchland village. From the car park turn left along the road for about half a mile to Shildon farm, where the metalled road ends. Remains of the old lead-mining industry can be seen. Continue climbing along the farm road, passed a barn, and on to the next farm which is called Pennypie House (This was once an Inn which sold pies to passing drovers and local mineworkers).

At Pennypie, do not follow the road to the farm, instead continue straight ahead through a gate and along the moor road. After about 100 yards the road curves to the right, leave it and continue straight ahead across the moor, to the right of a line of shooting butts. A ladder stile, over a wall, is visible in front of you.

Cross the stile and climb up over the moor slightly to the left of straight ahead, no path is visible. Once over the top of the hill, and starting to descend, you will come across a clear path which crosses your line of walking. This path is an old pack horse trail called the Carrier's Way, which ran from East Allendale to the South Tyne valley.

Turn left along this path passed a hut and through a gate. Eventually you will reach a fence on your left and pass under some electricity cables, and then come to a stile. Climb over the stile and go left to a shooting hut. At the hut take the wide moor road, going off to the right, and follow it until it peters out. Continue across the moor in the same direction, keeping on the top of the hill, for about 400 yards.

Climb down, to the right, into the valley bottom, until you reach a fence. Cross the fence, at a wet area, and go to the right of a sheepfold, crossing the valley floor. At the sheepfold curve right, along a clear path leading to the top of the moor. On the top continue in the same direction across a trackless area, keeping parallel to the woods on your left.

After about 600 yards a gate is reached, at the far left hand corner of the moor, beside the second of the two woods. Go through the gate and on to a farm road. Follow the road past some deserted farm buildings (Riddlehamhope). Continue on the road for some 3 miles to Newbiggin farm.

Pass through Newbiggin farm and about half a mile further on you will come to the main road, in Baybridge. Turn right and cross the bridge over Beldon burn, after about 50 yards turn left through a gate and continue along a wooded path on the right side of the river. On reaching the road in Blanchland turn left over the bridge and go through an arch by the post office, to return to the car park.
