FOOTBALL SKILLS

Control of the ball

Get in line with the ball to receive it.

Select which part of the foot (or other part of the body) you wish to initially control the ball with.

How will you control the ball? Cushion / wedge or one touch pass on.

Make your pass accurate- look up and communicate. Then make a move.

Consider dribbling or shooting as well- but think safety first.

Short passing

Get the ball in front of you in a good position to strike it.

Look at where your teammate is positioned.

Kick the ball through the centre line for accuracy.

Strike the ball with the inside / instep or the outside of your foot.

Keep your head still and follow through.

If your teammate is to make a run - adjust your pass.- Communicate!!!

Make sure you strike the ball with enough power to get to your teammate but not beyond, and not slow enough for the opposition to intercept.

If you want the ball - create space by spreading out wide.

Disguise your run.

Dribbling

Control the way & speed you approach the ball.

Keep your balance.

Change your direction or speed as you travel.

Do not dribble if you do not have to. - Pass / shoot.

Observe what is happening around you.

Turning with the ball

Control your approach - slow down

Bend knees

Accelerate out of the turn

Disguise your turn.

Screen the ball from opponents

Decide what you need to do now- You may not get away with another turn.

Types of turns practised during training.

Cruyff. Drag back Step over. Outside hook. Inside hook. What is your favourite? Perfect one but practice the others, as the opposition will soon work out what is your best turn.

Goalkeeping

Any player can be called upon to go in goal so you must know the basics - Have a go at being a keeper, you may enjoy it.

Keep just off the goal line.

Follow the play, and concentrate on the ball and all the players’ positions.

Help your teammates by making sure they do not lose their formation and the opponents make a run.

Remember to throw the ball underam.

Move into the line of the ball as it travels towards you.

Keep your hands above your waist for speed.

Put your body behind your hands if possible, just in case the ball gets past.

Be prepared- as the striker shoots keep your balance and make yourself look big.

Narrow angles as the striker approaches, making it hard for him to hit the target.

When you have the ball, you are in charge. Do not put the ball out until you are sure it is safe to do so.

Your team-mates may shout for the ball thinking that they are in space, you may see an opponent approaching, so keep the ball. Let your team know if you need then to create space - use your voice.

Shooting

Control the ball

Look to see where the G.K is positioned. - Hitting it at the GK rarely works

Keep the ball low.

Consider which corner.

Strike through the centre of the ball for accuracy. (Usually more important than power)

Keep your head still, keep your balance and follow through your shot.

Use the inside of your foot or the instep.

Look for the rebound - have another go.

Options- Dummy the G.K. Low shot. Dribble around G.K. Pass to a player in a better position

Stay calm - you are in charge!

If you score you are a hero in the eyes of your team. . If you miss they may have seen a better option,

and will probably let you know all about these.

Remember to score is great but football is a team game, and you often have the opportunity to pass.

If you think you were right to shoot, Fine -

Running with the ball

Make a good first touch away from you.

Use the ball to create space.

Run after the ball and cover ground with the least number of touches.

Use the laces area on the top of your footwear.

Pass with the foot that is in front.

Consider passing instead of running with the ball. You will get tired and may be caught out of position.

Free Kick

Decide before the game, who will be taking the free kicks,

Is this the correct side of the pitch for you to take the kick?

Decide if you should take a quick free kick, or is it best to get your players in position first.

But never waste a free kick by kicking the ball directly at a defender.

After you take the kick, move position

Heading the ball

This is not an option in our league-

But if you do use your head remember to always use your forehead.

(Like kicking the ball if you hit the ball underneath it will go up, if you hit it at the top it will go down)

Watch how the ball it coming towards you.

Get your body position right, facing the ball.

Arching your body to use back /stomach muscles.

Getting ready for the match

You might be a great player but unless you plan and prepare for the match you will be letting yourself and your team down

Look after your health.

Good food and lots of water is vital at all times.

Get a good nights sleep, especially on the night before a match or training session.

Find out all you can about the opposition. Who are the danger players? How do they take free kicks?

What are the G.Ks poor points.

Get your playing kit ready the night before.

Have a good breakfast, include food with plenty of carbohydrates. and water or juice.

Fill a bottle of water to take to the match/training session.

Set off in plenty time.

Arrive in time for the pre-match/ training talk, and warm up as a team.

Look the part, be smart and let the opposition see you train rather than going on the pitch to talk.

Be positive about the game ahead- you have trained hard, you know what to do.

During the game

Concentrate on the game

Look for the next move.

Play fair.

Your team concedes a goal. Get back into the game straight away.

Do look for what went wrong and try to prevent it from happening again but do not blame or critise another player, they will know what happened and will try to stop it happening again.

To criticise them will only make them feel bad, lose confidence and concentration.

Do not lose your temper - if you do your team will be on a downward slope.

Your team scores a goal

Enjoy the moment, but do not lose your concentration and get caught out of position.

The opposition will be keen to get the game moving, try to get position when the ball is in play and run the clock down.

After the game

Won? Well Done.

Lost? Lets put it right the next time

Sit down as a team- Keep warm and drink some water.

Listen to your leaders/ Team Captain and complete the game review sheet together.

This will help to plan the training sessions, improve your knowledge of the game, and improve your team’s performance.

Do not presume you will lose or beat the opponents the next time you meet.

Training sessions

These are vital in helping the club succeed, all players should attend whenever possible.

You can not expect to play a full part in a match if you have not taken part in the training sessions.

Team captains

The Captains should be able to play a full part in the game, and also see how the game is going.

Let your players know if they should defend or attack. Change positions. Change free kick taker.

Be mature and if a player is losing his temper cool him down

If your team losing do not let them get their heads down and think there is no way back.

Help the leaders at training and matches.
