A DAY OUT IN YORK
York is about 96 miles south of Heddon on the Wall and can be reached by a 1 to 1/1/2 hour train journey from Newcastle station, direct to York station, which gives good access to the city centre.
The alternative is a 11/2 to 2 hour car journey, depending upon traffic. The car journey can be made using either the A1, which provides dual carriageway, except for the last 10 miles, or the A19, which again is dual carriageway except for the last 23 miles, from Thirsk, which can be slow, if traffic is busy.
There is limited car parking in the city centre, but a park and ride option is available from Monday to Saturday inclusive.
Visit this York Web Site were you will be able to find out more about the city.
