The Inclosure Act caused the Common Land of Heddon to be divided on the 28th
of September 1717. The total area was 1020 acres and it was divided as
follows:
Earl of Carlisle - 504 acres on the west side
Julian Hindmarsh - 260 acres on the north east side
Thomas Bigge - 256 acres on the south side (In 1810 this passed to Cadwaller John Bates of Langley Castle)
The vicar of Heddon and his successors - 13 acres of Glebe land
This decision was reached by four arbitrators, who employed two surveyors.
The three main participants in the award took a lot of persuading before
they would agree to the vicar being given a share in the division.
The agreement also specified that highways, footpaths, wells and watering
places were to remain common
