REVIEW- "ANTHOLOGY- ROAD TO KINGDOM COME" (ESACD884)

In March, Castle Music issued "Run For Home", a compilation on its Castle Pie label (PIESD166) containing a mix of live and studio tracks from the Mercury and LMP years with a picture of the Mk.II band on the cover! Now, all those 16 tracks and another 19 besides have been compiled on the newly released double CD "Anthology- Road to Kingdom Come" (Castle Essential ESACD884). The insert folds out to reveal a nicely presented and interesting potted history of the band by Shaun Stallard written January 2000. The cover is the "original five in bed" picture last seen on the "Meet Me" single and the Charisma "Finest Hour" LP compilation [non German release, RG].

The new compilation continues Castle's "Newcastle's Finest- Remastered Repackaged with new liner notes" reissuing campaign. These comprise the CDs "Back And Fourth" (ESMCD811), "The News" (ESMCD812), "Sleepless Nights" (ESMDC808), "Dance Your Life Away" (ESMCD809) , "Amigos" (ESMCD810) re-released last November and the forthcoming remasters of "Elvis Lives On The Moon" (ESMCD391) and the "Lindisfarne On Tap" compilation (ESMCD399).

To a collector of all the above re-issues, there's no extras on this Anthology although the insert teasingly says that the track "One World" has been held back for an Anthology 2!! A statistical analysis reveals that all but one of the 10 live tracks included are from "Magic In The Air" recorded Christmas Eve 1977, all re-sequenced but still sounding like a continuous concert. The exception is "Brand New Day" from December 1983 which was originally released on the "Lindisfarntastic! Two" LP and on the "Caught in the Act" CD. The other 25 tracks are evenly divided between the 6 1978-1993 studio albums (4 tracks from each), plus the "We Can Make It" single from 1994, all in strict chronological order.

On the plus side, the sound quality is excellent. The "Elvis" tracks in particular have a noticeably greater clarity than the original 1993 CD. Selection of tracks is a very personal thing but the "singles plus a few more" logic gives a good history of the band. For the purist, the live versions may not be a substitute for the original Charisma tracks but "Magic In The Air" was a superb live album and Lindisfarne a superb live band. I am surprised a live "Brand New Day" was included when the studio single was recently included on the 1997 Music Collection International "Run For Home- Lindisfarne Collected" (MCCD305). One for anoraks- the single version of "Easy And Free" from "The News" is different from the album version being 10 seconds longer, having different harmonies and extra backing "chants" in the fade. The original 1996 "The News" CD (CLACD414) had the album version while the 1999 re-issue and this compilation include the single version!

Overall, this is an excellent introduction to the band and the range of material it has produced. I paid 10.99 for the 2 CDs today (2nd June 2000)- a bargain! It's just a pity there's not an unreleased bonus track to further tempt those who have everything especially when CD1 is 11 minutes less than CD2! "Stick Together", the anti-prejudice Simon Cowe B-side [Run for Home single] from 1978 (not yet released on CD) would have been nice!! However, Castle are so prolific in re-issuing that it's worth keeping a monthly check of the new releases on www.castlemusic.com. -  Roll on Anthology 2!!
